Grand Hotel Son Net, Mallorca

INTRO

I enjoyed a 2-night stay during early October at this exquisite retreat style hotel which is nestled in the picturesque foothills of the UNESCO World Heritage Tramuntana Mountains.

The private estate is located only 15 minutes from Palma and 25 minutes from Palma airport and has been restored by Cortesin Hotels and interior designer Lorenzo Castillo.

The private grounds span 57,000sqm and include multiple pools with private shaded cabanas, beautiful lawns and flowerbeds, fountains, gardens growing vegetables and herbs, a small farm, lemon and orange trees, century old olive trees and a private vineyard producing malvasia white wine. It has the most stunningly beautiful and peaceful setting.

ACCOMMODATION

There are only 31 rooms and suites in total and each are different, and I was lucky enough to view the majority of these. Each one boasts its own individual charm and although they have all been restored the designer has ensured the history of the art-filled, original 17th century palace, has remained. Many of the original features such as wooden beams, antique fireplaces and marble-finished bathrooms are still there.

I stayed in the Grand Suite Jaime 1 and this suite was my personal favourite out of all the ones that I viewed. It is very spacious with a separate lounge (which can be made into a second bedroom) and a private garden with a pergola patio with living and dining area and beautiful fountain. The bathroom was huge with the largest walk-in shower I have ever seen, a separate bath in the dressing area, and two separate sink areas. The suite is 120sqm and the garden 60sqm.

DESTINATION/EXPERIENCES

Dining at this hotel is an experience and treat just in itself. Breakfast is enjoyable and relaxed in beautiful surroundings on the terrace and is served á la carte. The main restaurant for dinner, MAR&DUIX is ‘famous’ in Mallorca with guests booking outside of the hotel secure reservations. The food is divine and during dining there are low key singers and musicians entertaining in the background.

The Son Net has an impressive spa where I was fortunate to experience an amazing treatment one afternoon. These treatments are exclusive bespoke and yoga and meditation also available on request. Next to the spa is the hotel gym and personal training sessions can also be requested.

Other experiences that I enjoyed during my stay was a private wine tasing with the hotels Sommelier, Marcel. With a private, almost one hectare vineyard first planted in 2006, Son Net has worked with a renowned Mallorca bodega to produce and bottle its own wine Malvasia wine since 2007.

First, we started tasting some white wine in the actual vineyard whilst Marcel leads us through the properties of this unique grape variety and explained the characteristic of the vineyard and the stages in which it is at any given moment. Then we went back to the hotel and enjoyed a private setting overlooking one of the many stunning views Son Net has to offer and sampled a gently sparkling white wine, rosé and a red before enjoying more beautiful wines over a delicious dinner.

Another experience I enjoyed was having a private guide to take us on a 4-hour hike around part of the stunning UNESCO World Heritage trails in Tramuntana. The scenery was beautiful, and it was a good way to burn off some calories enjoyed from the incredible MAR&DUIX restaurant in the hotel!

HIGHLIGHTS

I would recommend a break here for something truly memorable – a romantic getaway, special celebration or if you just need to completely relax and be pampered with service that is second to none.

The hotel does welcome families with young children, however there are no kids clubs or forms of entertainment for them. As it is very serene, peaceful and low-key I personally imagine this for an adults-only break. Either for a stay on its own or to make it as a two-centre holiday with a Palma city break.

I can honestly say this is the most unique property I have ever visited, and I was impressed by everything; the professional but friendly service, the ambience, the beauty of the property and the surroundings, the ‘wow factor’ of the suites and how every dining experience was an absolute pleasure. I can’t not only wait to return for my own holiday but recommend it to my clients for theirs, as I know I can do so with the utmost confidence.
