W Maldives Review

I’ve recently returned from the most incredible stay at one of the Maldives’ most breathtaking islands: W Maldives.

Intimate in size and stunningly beautiful, W captures everything I imagine when I think of the classic “no news, no shoes” Maldivian holiday.

What truly sets the island apart is its extraordinary marine life. The house reef sits remarkably close to the beach villas, giving guests easy access to turtles, reef sharks, manta rays and an abundance of tropical fish. The island also offers excursions to spot whale sharks nearby, adding even more magic to the experience.

One of the highlights of our stay was a guided snorkelling trip. It was unforgettable, and I’ll treasure the underwater photos and videos. Beyond the beauty, the guidance was invaluable — we learned how and where to spot turtles and certain species of fish, making our independent snorkelling even more rewarding.

As well as snorkelling, other water activities available are boating, jet-ski, kayaking, sailing and scuba diving.

I stayed in a Beach Villa with a Private Pool, which sits steps away from the powdery white sands and the shimmering turquoise sea. Designed for romance and relaxation, these spacious retreats include an elevated viewing deck with a swing seat – perfect for soaking up the sights and sounds of the Indian Ocean.

The stunning outdoor bathroom enhances the sense of space, with a powerful rain shower, a freestanding mosaic bathtub, and dual vanities. For added convenience, there’s also an outdoor shower for rinsing off after a dip in your private pool.

There are three main restaurants at W – Kitchen (International), Fire (Grill) and Fish (Seafood) – and you’re in for a treat no matter where you choose to dine.

And to finish the day in true Maldivian style, head to Sip for a sunset cocktail. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, whether you’re stretched out on the netting suspended above the water or settled comfortably on the decking, soaking in the most beautiful surroundings.

A true pinch‑me moment of our trip was the castaway experience on Gaathafushi, a tiny, untouched island owned by W and just a short speedboat ride away. We spent a couple of blissful hours there, think Robinson Crusoe, but with W’s signature hospitality, complete with delicious canapés and chilled rosé. It’s an experience every guest should try – turquoise waters, absolute silence, and that rare feeling of being beautifully isolated in paradise. Pure heaven.

Another incredible experience was sunset, deep-sea fishing which was arranged by the island. You can choose to keep your fish to take back for the chef or throw them back in the sea. The scenery at sunset was stunning and made for another wonderful memory to treasure.

I loved my time at W Maldives and would return in a heartbeat. I’d highly recommend it to clients who value exceptional snorkelling, vibrant marine life and a truly relaxing, peaceful holiday.

With its quieter evenings and activities centered largely around watersports and the underwater world, it’s an island that naturally suits couples more than families.

The island itself is breathtaking – the softest, powder‑white sand and the most vivid turquoise sea. A picture‑perfect slice of paradise.
