Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya
I stayed at Sanctuary Tambarare for 2 nights, this camp opened in June 2022. We drove from Nairobi to get here, and this took 4 hours, the last hour was through the Ol Pejeta Conservancy to get to the camp, and this was when the safari started, we started to see the animals immediately, it was amazing.
There are 10 luxury tents in camp and one Private Villa, I stayed in a luxury tent and viewed the villa. The accommodation is of an excellent standard, the beds are huge and comfortable and come with an electric blanket. There is a large dressing area with plenty of wardrobe and storage space and a hairdryer and magnifying mirror. There are two sinks, a large walk-in shower and a separate toilet. There is a turndown service where the team spray your room with bug spray and surround your bed with netting. You feel very safe and cosy, it was a pleasure and felt luxurious to spend time in the tents. All the tents have a large private veranda with seating overlooking the beautiful scenery.
The easiest way to describe the villa is two luxury tents with a large lounge and kitchen area (for private chefs) in the middle but all joined beautifully together. The villa has a large veranda spread over the whole front and a spacious garden area.
The camp has its own gardens where it grows vegetables and herbs, and the food is excellent, delicious. So much choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant overlooks a watering hole and during one breakfast time a family of elephants came to drink, this was incredible to watch; it was a ‘pinch me’ moment.
The camp bar is also located here and has a seating area with a fire pit. When you return from the evening game drives the fire is lit and it is so welcoming to have a drink there. The team shined torches on the watering hole and both nights buffalo were there which was exciting to see.
At the end of my stay, my small group planted a tree, which all guests do when they leave. A lovely touch and an accolade to the region’s conservation efforts.
There are so many highlights to my stay here, I don’t know where to start, I will treasure these memories forever. From arriving to the warmest welcome, then to the utter delight of seeing my tent and realising how luxurious it was. The game drives are incredible, and you have so many opportunities to see the Big Five as well as many other species. What is great about the Ol Pejeta Conservancy too is that your driver can go off road so can get very close up to the animals.
At Sanctuary Tambarare you can enjoy day and night drives, walking safaris, lion tracking, guided bush walks, meet the K9 dog unit and it is home to the last remaining two Northern White Rhinos. There is so much to do for all ages.
On our last night we were driven out into the wild for sundowner where we found a bar had been set up and waiting for us. I will never forget this evening, we watched the sunset whilst a herd of zebras slowly walked in line, in front of us on the horizon. It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen.
